Ongoing Mandatory Learning

Ensuring that we keep our members safe is a primary responsibility that all adult members have in Scouts. By regular updates of the appropriate learning, we ensure that our knowledge is refreshed and we can demonstrate this commitment. The regular completion of the learning is one method of mitigating some of the risks that we encounter within Scouts

It is your responsibility to make sure that your learning remains up-to-date and failure to update your learning before it expires may result in your District (County) Lead Volunteer suspending or retiring your role.

Ongoing mandatory learning covers Safety, Safeguarding (Safe Scouting) and First Response (First Aid). Each of these must be refreshed ahead of the three year anniversary to remain compliant.

Safety and Safeguarding must be completed within 30 days of joining and then renewed every 3 years.

When due, your “My Learning” will automatically populate with the learning course required for you to complete.

To remind members of expiring learning, the membership system will generate automatic notifications prior to expiry dates as follows:

Safety & Safeguarding (Safe Scouting) reminders to members are triggered before expiry at:

  • 90 days to the member
  • 60 days to the member
  • 30 days, 10 days,  3 days and 0 days  to both the member and their line manager

First Response (First Aid) reminders triggered at:

  • 180 days,  90 days and 60 days to the member
  • 30 days, -10 days, -3 days and 0 days to both the member and their line manager

Please note, there is no margin after Day 0. At Day 0 +1, the membership system alerts your District (County) Lead Volunteer who will then activate a suspension of role(s) until any outstanding learning is complete. Scouts has no appetite for non-compliance and must ensure that our members remain safe at all times.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
