External First Aid Qualifications

This page sets out the top up requirements / exemptions for people holding common first aid certificates; as well as information for Medical Professionals (Ambulance Service, Nurse, Doctor & Medical Student).

Introduction

Cambridgeshire’s First Aid Scout team is frequently asked to award the 10A and 10B modules for people who hold external qualifications. This is a difficult situation as while we don’t want to place extra training on individuals the world of first aid is very different from pre Hospital and medical professional qualifications.

However, there are a range of first aid qualifications that are registered with OFQUAL and which have a set (minimum) syllabus. These qualifications can be “topped up” to meet the requirements of the Scout Association “First Response” Module 10 syllabus – however, for the purpose of recognition, a learner has to present a full syllabus of the course attended in order to identify the necessary top up module.

Only training courses registered with OFQUAL can be accepted as part completion of module 10.

The external certificate will need to have the qualification reference listed on the certificate and has to be delivered as at least 2/3rds Face to Face. External courses delivered completely online  are deemed invalid for completion of module 10.

Please select the dropdown box below that matches the external qualification you would like to validate

First Aid at Work/Paediatric First Aid/Outdoor First Aid/First Resp. Emergency Care Suite 3/4

If you have one of the following qualifications:

  • First Aid at Work (2-3 days)
  • Paediatric First Aid (2 days)
  • Outdoor First Aid (2 days)
  • First Response Emergency Care Suite (Levels 3 & 4)

you will need to complete the First Response conversion course from My Learning – this covers dental incidents, sepsis / meningitis, chest pain / heart attacks and strokes.

N.B: This does not include Emergency First Aid at Work, Emergency Paediatric First Aid or Emergency Outdoor First Aid – please see All Other External Qualifications below if you have one of these.

The First Response conversion course can be found on My Learning by using the ‘Explore Learning’ tab and search for ‘First Response conversion course‘, or by following this link:

You will need to enrol on the course and email the learning team at learning@cambridgeshirescouts.org.uk once you have completed it.

Module 10B First Aid Practical Evaluation Session

If the syllabus for your course clearly states both Paediatric and Adult CPR are covered and assessed, then you will not need to complete a 10B, but will need to produce the course syllabus as evidence and email details to the learning team at learning@cambridgeshirescouts.org.uk

Otherwise you will need to complete a Module 10B First Aid Practical Evaluation session.

All Other External Qualifications

If you have one of the following:

  • Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
  • Emergency Paediatric First Aid (EPFA)
  • Emergency Outdoor First Aid (EOFA)
  • Activity First Aid (AFA)
  • National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)

you will need to complete the First Response e-learning course from My Learning.

For any other qualifications please send details to learning@cambridgeshirescouts.org.uk and we will let you know what you need to do to validate it.

The First Response e-learning course can be found on My Learning by using the ‘Explore Learning’ tab and search for ‘First Response e-learning‘, or by following this link:

You will need to enrol on the course and email the learning team at learning@cambridgeshirescouts.org.uk once you have completed it.

Module 10B First Aid Practical Evaluation Session

If the syllabus for your course clearly states both Paediatric and Adult CPR are covered and assessed, then you will not need to complete a 10B, but will need to produce the course syllabus as evidence and email details to the learning team at learning@cambridgeshirescouts.org.uk

Otherwise you will need to complete a Module 10B First Aid Practical Evaluation session.

Medical Professionals

This is a complicated area with wide variations

Ambulance Service

There are a number of qualifications across the services but the holder of any of the following should be awarded all modules;

  • Emergency Care Assistant (ECA)
  • Institute of Healthcare Development (IHCD) Technician
  • Associate Ambulance Practitioner (AAP)
  • Paramedic

You will be asked to provide evidence of your qualification (e.g. HCPC registration).

Please send details to learning@cambridgeshirescouts.org.uk

Nurse

Nursing doesn’t cover front line first aid. A discussion is required with a county First aid trainer in order to identify the elements of the syllabus that need to be covered, based on the nursing role held and work undertaken. This is especially relevant where an Advanced Nurse Practitioner role is held. Evidence of annual NHS Adult and Paediatric Basic Life Support (BLS) qualification should be provided for 10B to show recent and up to date CPR.

You will be asked to provide your current RCN registration number, and a copy of your latest BLS/ALS certificate.

Please send details to learning@cambridgeshirescouts.org.uk

Doctor

As Doctors specialise, not all areas are likely to be current and UpToDate. There is a huge difference between and A&E doctor and a Pathologist. It is likely that a professional discussion will determine what is appropriate for the individual.

You will be asked to provide your current GMC registration number, and a copy of your latest BLS/ALS certificate.

Please send details to learning@cambridgeshirescouts.org.uk

Medical Student

A medical student can’t be awarded any modules as they could be at any stage across multiple levels of training. If they have an associate award such as BLS some elements could be covered off.

Please send details to learning@cambridgeshirescouts.org.uk
