The great thing about volunteering with scouting is that it is always about what you can do, not what you can’t, so there is certain to be a role for you. Scouting is an inclusive, values based movement and membership is open to all those who share our fundamental values. Young Leaders are aged 14 to 18 whilst our adult volunteers range in age from 18 to their 90s!
We know that some adults will be able to offer only a few hours once a year whilst other may feel able to help for several hours each week. Equally some adults prefer to work directly with the young people whilst others may prefer more of a background role. We aim to have section leadership teams of sufficient numbers so that not everyone has to be at every meeting or event—meaning shift workers or those who work away from home some weeks can join the fun too. Many roles also work well as an informal “job share”. We also have a Bushscout County Active Support Unit, which teaches more practical skills to volunteers so they can then share them with young people.
Our volunteer journey page explains a bit more about the next steps, and is where some existing volunteers share their own experiences. You can also take a look at the video below if you need further inspiration, as no matter what role you decide to take you will be part of giving young people #Skills4Life.
