I’m aiming to raise £1,000 to fund projects to support the development of Scouting across Cambridgeshire.

“My story begins 2 years ago, I was 21st and had some health issues, I lost 7st during the first half of 2018 on a strict diet combined with playing football. I restarted football refereeing after a break of 15 years, and also trained as a rugby league match official but after a season decided that they were not for me.

My Scouting background is that I have just ticked over 30 years involvement with the Association, having first joined as a cub in Lincolnshire in September 1989. I was a Cub, Scout, Venture and Network in Lincoln District until 2005. Between 2000 and 2004 I was a student or lived in Loughborough, and got involved with a local group and the Scout and Guide Club, and via that spent 2 years running SSAGO nationally.

I landed in Cambridgeshire in 2005 and didn’t formally get involved until 2007, initially in Peterborough and then County intermittently since 2009. In 2014 I moved from Peterborough to Thrapston and for 18 months was primarily involved via Nene Valley, but retained an involvement in the County during that time. In mid 2015 I returned to Cambridgeshire and for the last year have been Queens Scout Advisor for the County.

18 months ago I came across a Facebook post by chance for an event at the Olympic Park, which was a 2 km run to support and raise awareness for male cancer. That went really well in September 2018, so decided to sign up for a half marathon for Orchid and it all started from there.

In 2019 I have done (having never previously run more than 5 miles!):

March 10km – Stroke Association Resolution Run
March 1/2 marathon – London Landmark for Orchid
April 10km – Cambourne
June 10km – Race for Life, Bedford
August 1/2 marathon – Kimbolton for MS Society
September 1/2 marathon – Great North Run for British Legion
September 2 miles – Chariots of Fire for Addenbrookes Charitable Trust
December 1/2 marathon – Nottingham, Holme Pierrepoint (technically this was the first for Cambs Scouts, but I wore the Dementia UK vest)

I have set myself a bigger challenge for 2020. Originally the idea was 12 half marathons from December to December, but it has crept up a bit. I’m now aiming to raise £1,000 to fund projects to support the development of Scouting across Cambridgeshire by running the following:

February – Richmond Park – 13.1 miles
March – London Landmark – 13.1 miles
April – Blackpool – 13.1 miles
May – Leeds – 13.1 miles
June – Huddersfield – 13.1 miles
July – Lemington Spa – 13.1 miles
August – Kimbolton – 13.1 miles
September – Great North Run – 13.1 miles and Saxilby – 5km
October – Chester – 26.2 km
November – Saffron Walden – 13.1 miles
December – Bury St Edmunds – 1/2 marathon

I, and Cambridgeshire Scouts, would be very grateful for any contribution you feel able to make

Thank you, Martin.”
