Cambridge Explorer Scout receives Scouting’s 2023 Unsung Heroes award
Congratulations to Abbie, Explorer Scout from Woodsmoke Explorers and 12th Cambridge for the Scouts Unsung Hero Award, a brilliant achievement and such an inspiration.
Graham Steed, from 12th Cambridge Scout Group commented that “We are delighted to announce (had to keep it under our hats for several months!) that on 8th December 2023, one of our Explorer scouts, Abbie, was at a national awards ceremony where she received her scouts unsung hero award from Chief Scout Bear Grylls. These awards are for youth members who do something extraordinary that may otherwise go unnoticed.
In January 2022 Abbie, without warning, suffered a brain haemorrhage. She was very seriously ill in hospital and was told it would be at least 9 months and possibly very much longer in rehab to properly recover or even be able to walk again. We certainly were not expecting her back at scouts any time soon.
- Abbie though was having none of it! Her shear bloody minded determination and refusal to give up along side the support and love of her doctors and family meant she was walking again and able to school and scouts in late March and by May you would hardly have known anything had happened. In July she was sailing, hiking and mountain biking at our summer camp in Northumberland.
- She is a genuine inspiration and we are all incredibly proud of her!
Congratulations Abbie“
Abbie, along with other award recipients and family members, got together at the Bear Grylls Adventure at Birmingham NEC. They were recognised personally by Chief Scout Bear Grylls for their achievements. Further details about the day and other award recipients can be found on The Scouts’ national website site (link).
