Southern 50 Hike, The Chilterns

Date: 10th February 2024 Location: The Chiltern Hills Sections: Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Adult Volunteer

Here is an invitation to start off the New Year with a hike across The Chiltern Hills.

The annual Southern 50 Challenge Hike is celebrating its 45th anniversary on 10th February 2024.  This famous challenge hike is designed for Explorer Scouts and adults in Scouting across the UK.  This event is also suitable as a linked activity for older Scouts.  It’s a navigation hike across a different area of The Chiltern Hills each year.  There are three routes: a 50 mile hike or a 50 km hike which is open to all, plus a 30 km route exclusively for older Scouts and Explorer Scouts.  Teams are between 3-5 participants.

The event is organised by a team from Greater London North and is a test of navigation skills as well as physical ability and teamwork.  The actual route is not disclosed until just before teams depart.  Teams have to navigate their way to each checkpoint in order which is shown as an eight figure map reference.
