Climbing & Abseiling – Artificial Structures
18th January - 19th January
Do you already climb and are looking to get an activity permit for your group?
This training weekend will cover the syllabus for the Climbing & Abseiling Artificial structures activity permit. (e.g. campsite towers/walls).
The format will be to start both mornings at Histon Scout HQ to introduce topics and ropework, then move to a climbing centre for the afternoons.
Time: 09:15 for 09:30 start. Finish 18:00 @ the centre.
Venues: AM 1st Histon Scout HQ, 1 Park Dr, Impington, Cambridge CB24 9LY and PM Pinnacles Centre, Main Rd, Northampton NN4 8ES (~1hr drive)
Cost: £45 payable to ‘1st Histon Scout Group’. Includes PPE, equipment hire and 2 days entry to the centre. Note, if you need climbing shoes, the centre hires them @ £3.50/d
Lunch: Please bring your own snacks, drink and packed lunch. The centre also has a cafe for snacks and drinks, but not meals.
Wear/bring: Clothing to climb in! Notepad & pen. You’re welcome to bring your personal kit if you have it.
Prior experience: We don’t have to be a ‘rock-monkey’, to get kids climbing! However as a minimum, you must be confident at putting on your harness, tying-in and belaying safely. We’ll build from there. If in doubt, please do an Introduction-to-climbing course first.
By the nature and purpose of the weekend, attendees must:
- Be interested in promoting climbing within Scouting
- Be able to make both days in full
- Be fit enough to climb. You need to ‘walk-the-walk’ for those future demo’s to Scouts, not just tie the knots…
- Be, and have a reputation for being, a ‘safe pair of hands’ with an attention to detail. Quite simply the safety and trust of your colleagues and charges is paramount.
Homework! : Some find there’s a lot to cover and digest. So there’ll be some supportive pre/post-course material, notes & web-links to help.
Assessment: Will not be during this weekend. I need a smaller group and you may need consolidation time. I’m happy to book another evening.
These are fun sessions and there are limited spaces. So if you are interested, please email me ASAP to book a place. I will confirm accordingly. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
