Scouts helped John triumph as Young Person of the Year

YOPEY-JohnCambridgeshire Scouting is extremely proud to announce that at a packed award ceremony held at Peterbrough Cathedral last night John Morris, aged 18, was voted Cambridgeshire Young Person of the Year from 10 very worthy finalists.

Despite a very difficult childhood, which would have led many to give up on life and take a very different path, John credits scouting with helping him become the fine young man he has become today. Living on his own since the age of 16 has not stopped him helping with scouting, including projects in Africa, nor gaining A levels that mean he is soon off to study at Keele University. In December he leads a team of scouters back to Africa, and no doubt some of his personal prize money will help his fundraising efforts to get himself there.

A truly inspirational young man who hopefully provides an excellent role model for others facing difficult circumstances, and proof to our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers that if you set your mind to it you can (with the right support) really achieve anything you set your mind to!

John spoke to Jermery Sallis from BBC Radio Cambridgeshire prior to the awards ceremony and this is what he said...
