700 Nights Under Canvas in One Weekend
Cambridgeshire Scouts were out in force at Wood Green Animal Centre, Godmanchester for the first outdoor event of the 2008/09 Scouting year; County Camp 2008.
Scouts from across Cambridgeshire attended this amazing camp enjoying their own adventure packed weekend.
More than 250 young people aged ten to 14 experienced a range of exciting activities such as archery, canoeing, climbing wall, night hike, rocket making, pioneering, massive camp fire (with singing!) and an assault course. There was also a slippery pole (not as easy as it seems) and crate stacking.
As well as the adventure of camping and the exciting activities on offer, Scouts are keeping with the founding principles of Lord Baden-Powell, and really enjoy being outdoors. BP called for all Scouts to be “Guardians of Nature”.
County Scout Section Commissioner, Arthur Towler said “The weekend was a great success. County Camp is a real challenge but it isn’t just about activities for their own sake. We encourage Scouts to try something new, feel the buzz of the achievement and then reflect on what that means."

The scale of this camp reflects the dedicated support of the 1,000 adult volunteers who give up their time every day of the week to ensure more than 5,000 young people can pursue their love of Scouting in Cambridgeshire. It is estimated that this weekend alone, adults will have given up more than 4,000 hours of their free time to enable the camp to go ahead.
