Peterborough Scouts Get "Freedom of the City"
22nd April 2007
Peterborough Scouts were recently the first in Britain to receive a Freedom of the City accolade. Around 800 Scouts were present to see the Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor Michael Burton, present the official scroll of honour at the St George’s Day celebrations in Peterborough Cathedral.
The Mayor presented the official Freedom scroll to a young person from each Section – Beaver Scout Thomas, Cub Scout Jack, Scout Alyson and Explorer Scout Emma, as well as District Commissioner Martin Hall. Hundreds of Scouting friends, parents and family members looked on proudly as they accepted the honour.
Mr Hall said,‘The granting of the Freedom of the City is the highest honour that the council can bestow on a group. It is tribute to all Scouts, past and present, who have made Scouting such an important part of the community in Peterborough for 100 years.’
‘All of our members are thrilled that the City Council has chosen to recognise the importance of Scouting and the efforts and commitment of so many people in this way.’
The decision to grant the Freedom of the City to Peterborough Scouts was taken at a special meeting of Peterborough City Council in October. Council Leader Councillor John Peach said,‘Scouting provides an excellent start in life for our youngest citizens. It has continued to provide a focus and a sense of direction for our youngsters.’
Former Chief Scout George Purdy was at the event, representing the present Chief Scout, Peter Duncan. All the Scouts present renewed their Promise and there was a presentation of awards to adult volunteers, recognising the contributions they have made, and are continuing to make, to local Scouting.
During the service long-standing city councillor, Charles Swift told those present that ‘the Movement is renowned around the world for its honesty and integrity.’ Speaking to the young people present, he added that if Scouts stick to the Movement's motto, Be Prepared, throughout their lives then the way ahead for them should be a clear route.
