Scouts Gather for Top Awards 2007
21st October 2007
More than 150 Scouts from across the County received a Cambridgeshire Top Award at Duxford in October from the Lord Lieutenant for Cambridgeshire, Hugh Duberly.
The annual event took place in the remarkable £25million Air Space exhibition of British & Commonwealth aviation at Imperial War Museum, Duxford. More than 300 friends and family members turned out to celebrate with the boys, girls, young men and women, aged 6 to 25. They were all recognised for outstanding achievement in Scouting having received the Chief Scout's Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum Awards, the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award and the Queen's Scout Award.
Scout Leader, Daniel Gooch from Cambridge, who as a Queen's Scout, attended the National St George's Day Parade in front of the Queen at Windsor Castle earlier this year says “Scouting often has an unwarranted reputation for being boring. But the achievement of these awards demonstrates just how adventurous Scouting really is. I spent three weeks in Slovenia with locals as part of my Nights Away. I also have had the opportunity to give a lot back to the community as a leader – there is a huge amount of satisfaction in seeing young people develop."
"Without the Queen's Scout Award, I would not have taken up Karate, visited the Arctic Circle or been on a trip to climb Kilimanjaro. And scouting manages to do all of this while remaining fun, from the smallest Beaver to the largest leader, everyone is just in it to have a good time, try new things and be adventurous."
County Commissioner, Richard Hames said "Scouting is all about opportunity; the opportunity to challenge yourself through adventure, meet new people, and go to new places. The Top Awards are the epitome of this", He added "All of the young people here today, from the 6 year old Beaver to the 25 year old Scout Leader are a true inspiration to others and I am delighted that the Lord Lieutenant is honouring each and every one of them in this way”
