Tesco Panto is a big draw for Scouts & Guides
The 4th Cambridge Brownies, along with the 14th and 18th Cambridge Beavers joined forces on Thursday 8th December to be amongst the audience for Cinderella.
The pantomime was devised and performed by the Marketing Department from Tesco Plc as part of a team building exercise for staff. More than 150 young people and adults packed the main hall at the 54th Cambridge Scout HQ to enjoy a fabulous evening of entertainment.
Well done to Girl Guiding Cambridgeshire East for responding organising the event with Tesco and to the team at the 54th Cambridge for providing such a fabulous venue.
There are some great photographs of the Beavers and Brownies at http://www.studio5.org.uk/Cinderella.htm.
Chamber of Commerce announces support to Scouting
If you are aware of friends or colleagues in business that are thinking about joining the Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce then please encourage them to refer to Cambridgeshire Scouting with their membership application.
The Chamber of Commerce has agreed to donate £25 to Scouting for every new member we introduce through the Scouting network.
Given that there are 10,000 parents and more than 1,000 adult volunteers associated with Cambridgeshire Scouting there is every possibility that some of us will know friends in business that are wanting to join the Chamber of Commerce.

Peterborough Scouts present Gang Show '05

The Peterborough Gang has just returned with their 58th show and a cast of 100 of which 60 are Cubs and Scouts up to the age of 14 from the two Peterborough Districts. They have been busy rehearsing for this year’s show from June also doing their normal Scout, Cub and Guide activities. This was a variety show for all the family with Songs from the Seventies, Beach Boys and the Gangs very own brand of comedy sketches that got the audiences feet tapping and hands clapping.
Marathon Challenge for Cambridgeshire Explorer Scouts
Cambridgeshire Scouts took part in the inaugural Marathon Challenge on Saturday 29th October 2005.
50 Young People (aged 14 to 18 years) from Explorer Scout and Ranger Guide Units across the county joined in the nine hour endurance event on the Cambridgeshire – Bedfordshire border.
Teams of 4 to 5 attempted to visit 26 marathon checkpoint locations over approximately 100 square miles. They were free to choose their own route, visiting as many checkpoints, spread between Gamlingay and Everton or Sandy and Wreslingworth as they could, in a maximum of nine hours.
Some of the checkpoints were be manned by students from the Cambridge University Scout & Guide Club (the organising team) and provided the Challenge, ranging from first aid and fire lighting to tests of mind over matter.
The first teams set off at around mid-day and finished between 9.00pm and 10.00pm. Over half of the challenge was undertaken in the dark. Marathon Challenge was a test of map reading, navigation and above all teamwork!
Cambridgeshire Explorer Scouts head for the hills!
Cambridgeshire Scouts revelled in the 21st annual 222 Challenge over the weekend of 14th to 16th October 2005.
80 Young People (aged 15 to 21 years) from Explorer Scout and Scout Network Units across the county took part in the event in rugged countryside somewhere within a 222 mile radius of Cambridgeshire. One thing was for sure – none of the participants know where they are going as the location is a closely guarded secret every year.
When they woke on the Saturday morning, having reached the secret destination late the night before, the participants received an envelope with instructions, had an opportunity to briefly orientate themselves and looked forward to a 36 hour endurance hike across adventurous terrain.
Operating in teams of four, the young men and women carried their own camping equipment and food for the duration. Survival skills came to the fore as they are expected to camp out in wild country overnight on the Saturday.
This was a fantastic event for the young people taking part and offers a real sense of achievement.
Cambridgeshire Cubs take up 'The Challenge’
Cambridgeshire Cub Scouts had a fantastic time at Challenge Day 2005. The annual Cub Scout event took place at Copley Scout Campsite and Holt Island, St Ives over the weekend of 8th and 9th October 2005.
More than 300 nine and ten year old Cub Scouts from across the County decended on the beautiful Copley campsite on the banks of the River Ouse over the two days. Proceedings commenced at 9.20am (prompt) on both days with the Grand Howl, a Cub Scouting tradition direct from The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling.
The event, which is run as two separate days because of high demand from the youngsters, offered ten challenging activities including Archery, Canoeing, Climbing and an Aeriel Runway Assault Course. In addition the boys and girls learnt about First Aid, lighting fires and cooking outdoors.
Beaveree 2005
Cambridgeshire Beaver Scouts had a fantastic time at the County Beaveree event on Sunday 10th July 2005. This was the biggest Scouting event in the County so far this year
Around 460 boys and girls aged 6 to 8 years, enjoyed a fun packed day of Scouting activities and adventure.
The weather was marvellous, which meant that the Beavers were able to take full advantage of the activities offered. These included Shooting the Dinosaur, boucy castles, football skills and other games. There was also a very popular puppet show!
A big thank you to the 180 plus adult volunteers who all worked really hard to make the day such a success.
Shouting for Cambridgeshire Scouting this Summer
The Cambridgeshire Scouting display at the Cambridge Big Weekend on Parkers Piece on Saturday and Sunday 9th and 10th July and the Littleport Show on 23rd July 2005 generated a lot of interest with the Cambridgeshire public.
Over the two weekends more than 200 young people, parents and prospective adult volunteers found out about the Scouting adventure.
A big thank you to the team from Cambridge, Newmarket, Ely, Granta, Cromwell and Crafts Hill Districts who turned out at both events to 'Shout for Cambridgeshire Scouting'!
