Magpas is big winner at the County PRIZE Day
By Chris Ward - 15th March 2006

When Magpas – the emergency medical charity – found itself in a spot of financial bother they approached Cambridgeshire Scouts and other local businesses and community organisations for help. The target: £250,000 in six months.

In true Scouting spirit, young people across the County have responded to this particular emergency, raising more than £1,000 to date and we know there is more to come.

Cambridgeshire Scouts have enjoyed a wide range of fun but simple fund raising activities whilst at the same time learning about the emergency response activities of the Magpas volunteers.

To mark this achievement, young people from Cambridgeshire Scouting handed over a cheque for £1,000 to Magpas on Sunday 12th March 2006 at the County PRIZE day conference.

In making the presentation, County Commissioner, Richard Hames said “In Cambridgeshire there are more than 5,000 young people aged six to 25 enjoying the Scouting adventure every week and it is fantastic to see them getting behind this much needed appeal. It just goes to show that young people are very much aware of the needs of other community organisations and recognise the fantastic work that Magpas does in the region.  We, Cambridgeshire Scouts, have proved that we can assist a fellow volunteer operation in their time of need.”

Magpas spokesman, Christian Morris said, “It is fantastic that the local Scouts, Cubs and Beavers have all pitched in like this.  Trauma is the biggest killer of children and young people in the UK so in helping Magpas they have raised money that will help our volunteers save lives of people in their own age group.  Everyone at the charity is very grateful.”

The Magpas team is happy to visit the Colonies, Packs, Troops and Units that took part in the appeal to help the young people understand the work of a Magpas volunteer first responder.
