Cubs take up the Challenge!
by Simon Gates, 9th October 2006

More than 250 nine and ten year old Cub Scouts from across the County decended on the beautiful Copley campsite on the banks of the River Ouse for two days of adventure and traditional scouting activites. Proceedings commenced at 9.00am on both days with the Grand Howl, a Cub Scouting tradition direct from Rudyard Kipling's "Jungle Books."

The event, which is run as two separate days because of high demand from the youngsters, offered eight challenging activities ranging from Archery and Canoeing right through to Climbing and an Aeriel Runway. In addition the boys and girls learnt about more traditional scouting skills, such as Emergency Aid, lighting fires and cooking outdoors.

Nigel Poulter, Assistant County Commissioner for Cub Scouting, commented on the benefits the weekend has had on the youngsters,

"The weekend had gone fabulously well. We have lots of young people smiling away, being encouraged to try new things and it's one of the better events we do with so many young people about. They'll meet new friends, try new activities and overcome some of the fears that they thought they had with some of the activities such as water sports or climbing. It gives them valuable experience for later on in life, and that's what Scouting is all about."
