Scout Group help at RSPB - 03/10/2009
On Saturday 3rd October 25 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and their families from the 1st Fenstanton & Hilton Scout Group helped the RSPB for the afternoon.
Meeting at Fen Drayton Lakes they headed off into the reserve under the supervision of Jacqui Miller, Warden, from the RSPB. Equipped with gloves and cutters the young people helped remove hundreds of plastic tree guards, following a similar event in early 2008.
Now the saplings have grown the rabbits and other creatures can do less damage so the guards can safely be removed. If they are not removed they can stop the further growth of the trees. To encourage them in their efforts the RSPB supplied squash and biscuits to keep them going during the afternoon.
Two huge sacks and a van were soon full of the guards that had been removed. The adults and youngsters alike had great fun squashing them in!
The youngsters worked so hard that there was even time for a fun nature scavenger hunt at the end of the afternoon.
By taking part in this community work the young people were able to count their efforts towards various scouting badges.
