THE DISCOVERY SAILING PROJECT

The Discovery Sailing Project was founded in 1971 by the 'Discovery Committee' and is one of the two prime offshore sailing projects of the Scout Association. Originally the 'Discovery Committee' ran training courses and boating activities on the River Thames. In 1973, it moved its activities to the South Coast where the Project's vessels are now based.

The Discovery Sailing Project is now the proud owner of the impressive 14 metre Seastream sail training yocht 'Discovery'. The Project's aim is to take young people, from all types backgrounds, to sea for the first time and to provide them with their first taste of sail training to give them the skills, fun and in due time experience to have the opportunity of their first command as a young skipper. We offer superb weekend and week voyages at competitive prices. Discovery also runs special voyages for the blind, deaf, and those with special educational needs.

Discovery will take to the high seas next year for the 2002 Cutty Sark Tall Ships Races in the Bay of Biscay, sailing from Brest to La Coruna, and on to Santander. These prestigious events bring youngsters from many nationalities together to experience the international flavour of life afloat, surrounded by giant sailing ships. Crew places are available for 16-25 year olds.

The Discovery Sailing Project is a well-established and experienced sail training project, being a founder member of ASTO (The Association of Sea Training Organisations) and a long established Royal Yachting Association recognised training establishment. The Project also owns a small sail training yacht 'Bambi' based on the south coast, offering a variety of practical sailing courses in the Solent area. The project also runs residential theory based courses in London during the winter months.
