12/13 July - Junior Sections event

Raring to go The 'coordinated ski' team practicing Phorensic science Ready to fire

Beavers and Cubs were challenged to work together on a fun day of activities designed to encourage team work and cooperation. Following an action packed day programme the Beavers went home while the Cubs remained to set up camp, prepare their own tea and and then attempt more challenges before finally dropping into their beds

Continuing with the theme of co-operation and using the currency that had been 'earned' at tent inspection the Cubs spent an exciting morning on 'Trading Post' activities before breaking camp and heading home

21 June - Beavers and Cubs visit Gilwell funday

Rafting in the bomb hole Hanging onto the moving wall Carting Riding the zip wire

Beavers and Cubs from Cromwell District had a fantastic time at Gilwell - so much so that they want to go again. We only managed to get one of the Beavers wet as he fell into the bomb hole, but hey that didn't stop us. We managed to do climbing, rafting, archery, death slides, to name but a few. One of our beavers is normally very shy and reserved but they certainly came out of their shell. Unable to swim, frightened of water, they were among the first to want to do the rafting and they never looked back. They threw themselves into all the activities that we managed to get to and they returned changed people. Unfortunately we ran out of time and didn't even manage to do half of the things that were on offer. We will definitely go again!

The thing I liked best was when I got to play with the Robogeddon Robots. The Glacier Simulator was awesome! I also like the Beach volleyball & the Archery.
Jack (Cub Scout)

We did Archery, it was fantastic. The best thing for me was Rock Climbing it was wicked, awesome and really really great fun. We also did robot gladiators! We went on bouncy castle style volley ball. It was tremendously fun, I absolutely loved it.

8 June - Beavers and Ponies

Beavers and ponies at Yaxley

On Sunday 8th June the 1st Bury and Upwood Beaver Scouts went on a Pony Morning at Yaxley Riding Stables. The morning involved learning about the ponies; grooming, tacking up, and doing gymkhana games followed by a well deserved party lunch

The whole event came about because the Beavers wanted to try something new. So they decided to raise the money by doing a bag pack at the local supermarket where they managed to raise £415 to fund this event and a couple of others. All had a lot of fun and the experience goes towards their Outdoor and Fitness Challenge badges

16-18 May - Beaver sleepovers

New tents, but nowhere near ready for bed Making volcanoes Volcano eruption 'Collecting' fossils

Roaring campfires, erupting volcanoes, designing rain sticks, experimenting with tie-dying, discovering dinosaurs... all part of the adventure for 44 Beaver Scouts taking part in two district sleepovers over the weekend 16th/17th/18th May. Following the themes of Noah's Ark and Cavemen, Beavers from 5 different Colonies pitched their tents for the first time at their Scouting HQ and enjoyed a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, and yes, they did sleep, to earn their Nights Away badges.

10/11 May - County Activity Challenge

High ropes winners Erm...... Don't move! He will fit, honest

15 Scouts from 1st Earith, Bluntisham & Colne Scout Troop took part in the County activities weekend at Mepal

Each of the four teams entered seven events, from a choice of ten - archery, rifle shooting, climbing, cyclo cross, canoe polo & slalom, dinghy sailing, volleyball, high ropes challenge, 'blood & gore 911', assault course and team building brain teasers. The weather was superb, although a bit too hot at times. All of the Scouts entered every challenge whole-heartedly and they all worked well in their teams

After two days of competitions, two of the EBC teams were in the volleyball final play-offs but narrowly missed out on the trophy. But they didn't all come home empty handed - one team won the high ropes challenge trophy

20 April - St George's day parade and service

RAF Wyton Area Voluntary Band Colour parties Katie, Laura and Revd James Pullen Cromwell District Fellowship

This year we returned to a traditional church service for St George's day and over 400 of us managed to pack into All Saints Parish Church in St Ives - just!

We were lucky to have the RAF Wyton Area Voluntary Band lead us through the town again, which together with the spectacle of all the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts with their flags, really made heads turn. The Cromwell District Scout Fellowship were also on parade, resplendent in new magenta sweatshirts bearing their new logo

Following on from 2007 and 2006 where the service and renewal of promises has been led by the young people, this year saw all the readings, prayers, Scout Laws and Promises being read by the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts with Explorer Scouts also ushering in the church and taking the collection, which made £160 for a local youth charity.

11-13 April - District Pack Holiday

High ropes Quad racing Fencing Vertical challenge

36 Cubs and their Leaders went to the PGL activity centre at Caythorpe in Lincolnshire for an adventure packed weekend enjoying activities that can't normally be offered using the resources available in the District

The Packs found themselves facing challenges such as Quad Biking, Air Rifle Shooting, High Ropes (12m above the ground), the Vertical Challenge, the Big Swing (10m above the ground), Zip Wire and Fencing. Everyone was given the opportunity to have a go at every activity and the way that Cubs from different packs helped and encouraged each other demonstrated the spirit of Scouting in a fantastic way.

16 March - Cromwell's 'Urban D.C.' joins Essex Network Powerbockers for Sport Relief

Sport Relief 2008 Crossing the finish line The final straight A happy DC

Tony Best has been having a look at the new Scout and Explorer Scout 'Street sports' badges and has risen to the challenge to take part in the Sports Relief Mile at Milton Keynes along with a group of Essex Scout Network powerbockers (powerbocking is a term used to describe running/jumping/tricking on spring stilts).

Tony also joined Essex Network and Explorers at Gilwell to film for Saturday's breakfast show on BBC1. "It was great meeting up with these guys who have been using the stilts for some time - they taught me quite a bit about how to look less clumsy on them, which gave me a bit of confidence and of course, made me wish I could do some of their fancy tricks. We can all learn something from the Young People in Scouting". See it on YouTube

The new 'Street Sports' badges are another sure sign that Scouting is staying relevant to our members - click on the badges to check out the requirements:

15 March - Time Machines save the World

Beavers handicrafts Beavers handicrafts Beavers handicrafts Presentations

A Scout HQ on stilts surrounded by a raised road and houses and lots of water was how Somersham Beaver Scouts see our community in 2057. Their vivid imagination and careful work won them the Colony Entry Prize in the annual Cromwell Beaver Scout Handicraft Competition held in the Free Church, St Ives

Beaver Scouts from all around Cromwell Scout District have been working hard on this year's entries which included the design of a new Beaver Scout badge, a drawing of a leader modelling a new uniform for 2057 and writing an illustrated story of a Beaver Scout adventure in the future

28 Feb/5 March - Adults winter mountaineering, Aviemore, Scotland

Cold and windy

Seven adult members of the CMC experienced some wickedly wild weather in the Cairngorms during a 4-day winter skills trip to Rothiemurchus Lodge, near Aviemore at the end of February.

70 mile-an-hour winds buffeted the group on the first 2-days of the trip during a basic winter skills course led by an old friend of the club, Mark Shewry of Mountain Inspirational. After learning the basics of walking in winter (as Mark told the group: "it's not just a case of putting one foot in front of the other!") and using the ice axe to arrest a fall on day one, the crampons came out on day two. After getting used to having 12 metal spikes on each foot the group then had an introduction to avalanche safety on the slopes of Coire an t-Sneachda whilst examining the layers of the snow pack before braving the howling winds on top of the Cairngorm plateau en-route back to base.
