Cubs in CamJam Taster Day
By Simon Gates, 9th August 2006
Over 200 Cub Scouts from around the country flocked to CamJam on Wednesday to get a taste of the International Scouting Jamboree experience. The packs...most of whom were visiting Scouts and Explorers from their local groups camping at the event, had an opportunity to take advantage of the wide range of activities offered to the scouts and guides over the past few days.
In small groups they wandered the stretch of the site, taking part in 3 main activity zones:
Zone 1: Adventure
The Adventure zone tested the nerve of even the toughest Cub. The climbing walls offered a challenge for anyone wanting to get their feet off the ground, whilst the go-karts tested their basic handling skills and concentration. For those with no fear of the dark though, caving offered a chance to lose yourself!
Zone 2: Techno
The Techno zone was full of techology and machinery. The Robogeddon Arena saw huge Cub controlled robots try and flip eachother over to earn points. Also available was electronic shooting (where competitors targeted random lights that flashed up), model land yachts and radio controlled cars.
Zone 3: Craft
The Craft zone was full of practical and wonderful craft idea. Glass engraving, woggle and keyring making, mask painting and hamma beads were merely a few of the vast array on offer. This provided a chance for the cubs to make their own souvenirs to remember the day by.
As well as the 3 Activity Zones, Cubs were treated to some circus skills. Games based around jumping through hoops and walking on stilts were amongst the skills available.
Time flew by and the day soon drew to a close. To finish off the Cubs gathered in the main grandstand for a photoshoot before collecting their belongings and heading home. Everyone left with a special CamJam badge and cap, as well as the souvenirs they made in the craft zone.
It is hoped that for many of the Cubs this will be the first of several Jamboree experiences...maybe next time as a scout camping on site, mixing with others from across the globe.
CamJam 2006, Cambridgeshire's International Scout Jamboree, is based at Huntingdon Racecourse between 6th-13th August and has over 1,300 scouts and guides in attendance.
