Beavers Unite for Easter Adventure
28th March 2007
Around 80 Beaver Scouts from Cambridge and Granta Districts ran wild at Abington Campsite today (28th March) in search of 100 specially donated Easter Eggs. Colonies from the 12th, 18th and 26th Cambridge were invited by the two Whittlesford & Duxford colonies to take part in what was billed as the Granta District Beaver Easter Egg Hunt and Sausage Sizzle.
The event, sponsored by 'Russells Estate Agents' and open to all Granta District Beaver colonies, saw 100 Boxed Easter Eggs hidden all over the site, hanging and hiding in plastic bags. It was the job of the Beavers to work in small groups and collect as many as they could. Some proved straight forward whilst others were a little more difficult to hunt...like the one hiding up the flag pole!
After 10 minutes of searching, practically all bar a few had been found, so the activity was called to an end. Everyone gathered in the main field before rushing over to the campfire circle for hotdog and a drink, followed by some traditional campfire songs round the fire. The Beavers were in full voice...and even a few of the locals playing football on the field opposite joined in with the singing!
Simon Gates, Beaver leader with all three of the visiting Cambridge colonies, commented;
"It's been a really good evening and the Beavers have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It's a shame that some of the other Granta District colonies haven't taken part, but all credit to the leaders at Whittlesford & Duxford who've done a tremendous job in putting this event together. We're thrilled they invited us along and hope to return the gesture by inviting them to a Cambridge District event!"
"They've done something I'd like to see a lot more of across the county...groups and districts coming together and sharing events and activities with eachother. It's a key 100 year old value of scouting and I hope we can encourage more groups to do the same in the future."
In total, 92 of the 100 Easter Eggs were recovered and shared amongst the Beavers and leaders who were present. As for the remaining 8 still hidden on site, some lucky scouts are going to be in for a treat!
