Gilwell Funday

Beavers reach new heights at Gilwell Funday
An account by Simon Gates, 17th June 2006

It was all smiles from a selection of Cambridgeshire Beavers and Cubs who were lucky enough to attend the Gilwell Funday this weekend. Catching an early coach from St Ives, courtesy of Cromwell District, the fortunate few were off to celebrating 20 years of Beaver Scouting and 90 Years of Cubs with many thousands of other scouts from around the country.

With the park not opening until 10am, early arrivals watched as coach after coach flooded in by the dozens. Clowns on tall stilts greeted everyone as they entered, waving through the windows and attracting the attention of the excited scouts. Once out of the coach and walking towards the attractions, music filled the air and the atmosphere was full of anticipation.

On entering the grounds it became obvious that Scouts HQ had pulled out all the stops to offer the wealth of activities the Funday had to offer. Amongst the collection spread across the land were pedal karts, climbing, abseiling, robot wrestling, swimming, archery, crafts, and even a circus with different performances throughout the day. It was just a question of where to start!

Once split into small groups, everyone went their own way in pursuit of the adventure they wanted to have. My group, consisting of Beavers from Wyton and Cambridge, opted to start the day with the inflatables. Bouncy castles, bouncy table football, bouncy assault courses and pushballs were available in abundance...but what caught the imagination most was a giant bouncy slide. The Beavers wasted little time in hurrying to the top, only to hurl themselves down the steep slope in as many different fashions imaginable.

Next stop was the circus where some amazing international performers showcased their talents. Whether it was balancing, balloon modeling, juggling or aerial antics you couldn't help but be impressed by what you were seeing.

After lunch, the sun came out with a vengeance and it suddenly turned very hot. This, along with a 1 hour queuing time, made the chance to go climbing a battle of wills.  Heat and frustration took it's toll, but with a bit of encouragement, everyone stuck with it and they weren't disappointed. For many, this was the first time they had ever climbed or had the chance to face a fear and conquer new heights. Once on, it was hard to tear them away.  They admitted afterwards that it was "worth the wait."

With the day quickly drawing to a close there was just enough time to sample the amusement rides before heading back to the coach for the journey home.

The Gilwell Funday was very well received by those who went, and if any leader is thinking of taking their Beavers or Cubs to next years event then I'm sure they'll be in for a treat. Its sheer range of activities are bound to keep everyone amused for the length of the stay, from the avid adventurers through to the quiet craftsman in the group. However, all good things come to those who wait...and in some instances patience may be required.
