Beavers 'Go Global' with Beaveree 2007!
15th July 2007
680 Beaver Scouts from across Cambridgeshire have gathered at Cottenham Village College for the biennial County Beaver Jamboree. Beaveree 2007, the biggest event of any single section in the county, gave Beavers an opportunity to celebrate 'International Customs and Cultures' in a variety of ways and was held in conjunction with the Centenary of Scouting.
Starting at 10am, the Beavers gathered round the flag pole in their colonies for the official opening before separating into groups of around 170 for the main activities. There were 4 zones to explore, with an hour dedicated to each one:
ZONE 1 - INTERNATIONAL STORIES
Polly Howat, international story teller, was on hand to share a few stories from around the world. She told three interactive stories...one originating from India, another from West Africa and the last from Spain.
ZONE 2 - AFRICAN ADVENTURE
The African Adventure was a mixture of activities based on an African theme. There was music making through instruments, drumming and body percussion, and crafts in the form of African tribal necklaces, decorations and an instrument.
ZONE 3 - GLOBAL GAMES & OBSTACLES
An assortment of games and obstacles from across the globe, some just for fun whilst others to test the Beavers abilities.
ZONE 4 - WORLDWIDE WORSHIP & CULTURAL CRAFTS
The Beavers were invited to experience some of the traditions that shape children's lives everywhere and incorporated a theme of 'sharing'. There was plenty to choose from; Ramadan and making Eid Medallions; creating their own Dreidels to understand more about Hanukah; Finding out about the Huichole Indians of Mexico and their traditional Ojo de Dios (Gods Eyes); making dragons heads for the Chinese new year; celebrating the festival of Diwali with lamps and understanding more about Buddhism through their traditional Tibetan Elephants.
The Beavers rotated from base to base, with two carried out in the morning, two in the afternoon, and an hour for lunch break and run about time sandwiched in between. The Beaveree finished off with a closing ceremony back round the flag pole and a prayer before saying goodbye at 4pm. Everyone who attended went home with a special 'Beaveree 2007' badge to remember the event by.
