Beaver looks to spaceBeavers scan the Summer Sky
An account by Lois Farrow, 14th Cambridge Beaver Scout Leader

At the end of term, having been on many outings I asked the Beavers what event they enjoyed the most and why? One they all commented on with great enthusiasm was our trip to Cambridge Observatory.

I remember their open mouths and the ‘WOWS’!! when our guide Carolin explained they were handling something from outer space which was called a meteorite. I think they all felt like Dr Who. Another unusual experience was to see and hold moondust, the excitement was overwhelming at this point.

Carolin took us outside and shone a beam of light high up into the sky from the palm of her hand, where a tiny torch lay. It was like something from Star Wars using laser guns, the Beavers were amazed at seeing Mars.

We were allowed to use two telescopes to observe the solar system. The enormous historic one donated in 1830 and the Thorrowgood telescope. Craters on the moon were easily visible, each Beaver left the telescopes with a huge grin from ear to ear. Finally questions came out in force for Carolin.I have to admire her patience and thank her hugely for an informative and exciting evening. GREAT!!!

“I liked being out in the dark and seeing the beam of light jump from planet to planet. It was a great night.”
Prea, Beaver Scout

“I wish I had some meteorites to add to my rock collection, where can I get some? It was my best trip ever”
Ethan, Beaver Scout
