Scouts from Cambridgeshire Jet Off for the Adventure of a Lifetime
Good Luck to the 40 Explorer Scouts, Senior Section Guides and Leaders from the 'CambsLan', Cambridgeshire Jamboree Unit who this Sunday (24th July) will travel to London Heathrow to fly off to the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden. The Scouts from Cambridgeshire will join 4,000 other Scouts from across the UK and 34,000 others from nearly every country in the world for two weeks of activities, fun and making new friends in the most truly international event on the planet.
The Cambridgeshire contingent are flying to Denmark for three days in which the capital, Copenhagen, will be taken over by the UK Scouts getting to know each other, seeing the sights and taking part in activities, before they travel to the Jamboree site in the South of Sweden by coach.
As well as being a fantastic opportunity for young people, the event is an amazing chance for adult volunteers to take part in activities and learn new skills that they can use in other aspects of their life.
The World Scout Jamboree will include seven days of activities, with modules based around global development, quests, people and the environment. One of the key elements of the programme will be using the natural environment as a learning tool, demonstrating both its vulnerability and what individuals can do to better protect the world we live in.
Alyson Royle, aged 15 from Peterborough said “I can’t believe we are actually here about to go! I have been counting down the days until we leave and finished packing two weeks ago. The people I am going with have become my closest friends and I can’t wait to make friend with Scouts from all over the world!”
Richard Gray, aged 17 from Cambridge added “I can’t wait to try all the activities they have got planned. I’m most looking forward to meeting new friends from across the world. I’ve never met anyone from outside Europe before, I’m going to try and make 100 new friends, because if not at the World Scout Jamboree, then when?”
County Commissioner, Richard Hames said: “While lots of people know that Scouting is all about adventure, they often don’t realise that adult volunteers get to do just as much as our young members through their involvement. The World Scout Jamboree is a great example of this. Over the course of the Jamboree Scouts will be able to meet people from around the world, take part in amazing adventures and experiences and be challenged to think about global issues in a new light. That is why Scouting is one of the greatest youth movement on earth and why I am so proud to be part of it.”
Good Luck to the CambsLan Contingent, have a fantastic time.
Cambridgeshire World Scout Jambore
Unit Badge
The Cambridgeshire Jamboree Unit is proud to be able to offer their unique and colourful unit badge to all Scouting and Guiding members, other units attending the Jamboree and badge collectors alike. As well as featuring the ‘big yellow duck’ we have chosen as our mascot, the design follows the ‘cloud’ theme for the 2011 Jamboree and has a highlighted border of Cambridgeshire County, with both the Sweden and UK flags incorporated into it too.
The Badge is £2 and all proceeds from the sale of badges will go direct to supporting the unit on their World Scout Jamboree adventure. We think this badge will be highly collectable, but there is a limited run, so don’t miss out!
Ideal for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Leaders. Use it as an opportunity to help them find out about the Jamboree and the international dimension of Scouting
