Cambridgeshire 2007

County Commissioners Challenge 2007

Last year I gave the County a challenge to raise money for Magpas, you rose to this challenge magnificently and raised well over £2,000.

For 2007 I am challenging each Scout Group in the County to do something in your local community leaving a legacy based around the number 100.

I offer some suggestions below but I am sure you can think of many more:

To help you with the challenge there are lots of organisations willing to work with Scouting on community development. In addition to Magpas we have recently been approached by organisations such as Cancer Research UK (Race for Life), Kidney Research Association (Peterborough Cycle Marathon), National Trust (Wimpole Hall), Grafham Water Lions Club (Safari sponsored walk) and Cambridge Community Volunteer Service (Kings Hedges Clean Up) for help and support with community events and activities. Make use of these and other organisations in planning your challenge. They will provide great opportunities for projects and excellent publicity for a good turn well done.

Once you have decided on your challenge please let us know what you intend to do. Send some details to Chris Ward and he will help you with publicity and community contacts (chris.ward@cambridgeshirescouts.org.uk).

Agent 2:007

Deputy County Commissioner, Phil Garrett is Agent 2:007 for Cambridgeshire and he is your first point of contact for information on the Scouting Centenary.

Founders day (22nd February 2007)

The 22nd February 2007 was the 150th birthday of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, Founder of the World Scout Movement. The anniversary is celebrated by nearly 28 million Scouts across the world as 'Founder's Day'. This year Founders Day was an opportunity to give thanks for the Founder’s life and work and to celebrate diversity in culture, colour and creed.

Co-incidentally, Baden-Powell shared his birthday with his wife, Olave, who later became World Chief Guide. Girlguiding UK celebrates the same day as 'Thinking Day’.

A special national service took place at Westminster Abbey attended by Scouts and Guides from all parts of the UK. It was an occasion, not just to celebrate the Founder, but also the special spirit of unity that exists between the two youth movements.

Founders Day 2007

And in Cambridgeshire:

Founders Day Service,
Ely Cathedral – Sunday 25th February 2007
A celebration of Scouting for past and present members took place at Ely Cathedral on the afternoon of Sunday 25th February 2007. The Cambridgeshire World Jamboree contingent played a key role in the delivery of the event.

The service was followed by a reunion reception at Kings School, Ely.

Centenary Beaver Scout event

On Sunday 15th July 2007, Beaver Scouts from across Cambridgeshire took part in an amazing day of international based activities at Cottenham Village College.

Beaveree 2007

21st World Jamboree (27th July to 8th August 2007)

In the Summer of 2007, 40,000 Scouts from almost every country in the world joined together at the largest World Scout Jamboree ever. Hosted by the UK at Hylands Park, Chelmsford, Scouts celebrate the centenary, made new friends and showed that peace is possible in the world.

Cambridgeshire Scouting is proud of the 36 young people (Scouts and Guides) selected to attend this historic event.

Together with Scout leaders Chris Halliday, Alistair Easterfield and Guiders, Deb Sutton and Liz Elmore, they were part of the largest UK contingent ever sent to a World Jamboree (6,500).

The World Scout Jamboree is a gathering of Scouts from around the world for 12 days of adventurous activities, memorable events and international friendship. It is held every four years and the most recent have been in Thailand, Chile, Holland and South Korea. The UK last hosted the World Scout Jamboree in 1957 at Sutton Coldfield. The 21st World Scout Jamboree was the biggest ever with up to 44,000 participants and staff representing over 200 countries and cultures!

There were people present from more countries than there are present in the United Nations. It took an hour to walk across the site and to get everyone to Hylands Park one coach arrived every minute for 24 hours!

Home Hospitality

Home Hospitality is a unique opportunity for Cambridgeshire Scouts of all ages to have a truly international experience without travelling outside their own home. At least 8,000 foreign Scouts were hosted by families or in group accommodation before and after the World Jamboree.

Home Hospitality was a key element for the 21st World Jamboree in the UK during 2007 and there was lots of involvement from Cambridgeshire Scout Groups and Districts. It was a great opportunity to experience International cultures and be part of the World Jamboree.

Scouting’s Sunrise (1st August 2007)
Dawn of a new Century for Scouting

So, where were you at 8.00am on 1st August 2007?
It all started on 1st August 1907 on Brownsea Island, when Scouting’s Founder, Robert Baden-Powell, blew his kidu horn to open the world’s first experimental camp of young people he named Scouts. From that day to this, Scouting has never stopped growing and it is the world’s largest youth organisation – that alone is a reason to celebrate.

Just as Scouting was relevant to the future of the world back in 1907, the principles of Baden-Powell’s vision are still relevant for young people and society in 2007 and beyond.

Sunrise was a celebration of the future of scouting and an opportunity to look to how we can improve it to meet the needs of even more young people, their families and communities and offer better Scouting to more young people across the UK and worldwide.

At 8.00am (local time) on 1st August 2007, Scouts and former Scouts met in large and small gatherings around the World to renew their Promise in the second century of Scouting. To commemorate the moment for the World, the same kidu horn that BP blew on that very first morning was once again blown at 8.00am on Brownsea Island.

As each time zone hit 8am, Scouts around the world took part in a celebration of Scouting’s Centenary with their families. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Explorer Scouts, Scout Network members and adult volunteers, welcoming the dawn of a new century for Scouting by renewing their Promise.

The BIG County Breakfast (9th June 2007)

The BIG County Breakfast was an opportunity for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in Scout Groups across the County to raise much-needed funds.

Every year the 1st Fenstanton & Hilton Scout Group cook breakfast for members of the public at Fenstanton Clock Tower. In 2007 it was on the 9th June and what’s more, they invited the rest of the County to join them in the fun all around the County.

After all the Breakfast in Fenstanton is always popular and raises lots of money for the Scout Group.

Scout Groups were encouraged to chose a prominent location in their local community and cook full English breakfasts, bacon rolls, hot drinks and squash between 7.30 am and 11.00 am on Saturday 9th June 2007.

There was plenty to do for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts such as cooking, serving and washing up, all with just a little help from the adults who support the Group.

So if you like the idea of cooking “al-fresco” and raising much needed funds and profile for your Group then get on board with this fabulous project in 2008.

In addition to breakfast, why not run a cake stall, children’s tombola and Raffle. Talk to local shops and businesses about help with prizes.
